Seize the Day - our Youth Theatre Sharings 2024
Published on 5 March 2024.
Our Youth Theatre members are busy preparing and rehearsing for their sharing this month, with performances taking place on Saturday 23 March at our studio in the Wellspring Settlement, Barton Hill.
The youth theatre sharing comprises two double bills:
12 – 1pm: Louder Than Words and 7-10’s
4 – 5pm: 11-13’s and 14-19’s
This year, our Youth Theatre sharings form part of a national campaign week, Seize the Day, an initiative by the Drama & Theatre Education Alliance (DTEA), taking place between the 20 – 27 March.
While all arts subjects have seen reduced student take up in recent decades, there has been a 37% decline in the number of students taking GCSE Drama since 2010.
As part of the Creative Industries, the fastest growing sector of the UK economy which outperforms Oil and Gas, Life Sciences, Aerospace and Automotive industries combined, this downward trend poses a serious threat to the future of the sector.
The Seize the Day campaign aims to raise the profile of Drama in schools and of Theare for young audiences by engaging MPs in drama and theatre events. You can read more about the Seize the Day campaign here.
We will be inviting our local MP and decision makers to see the creativity of our youth theatre members on 23 March.

The performances are all inspired by our show Igloo. Each group has taken themes from this show as a starting point, before exploring their own ideas and devising their piece. With the support from our talented team of artists, each group has ended up with completely different and imaginative stories.
You are invited to join us for the performances. Space is limited, so if you would like to join us for the performances, please email youththeatre@travellinglighttheatre.org.uk to book a free ticket.

Louder Than Words
Louder Than Words have created a piece showing their Super Energy Power! Each participant has made a Hero character which is centred around something they love or feel passionate about. Through their different energies they will show the audience how to turn feelings of frustration into a collaborative, creative and imaginative work. Be ready for the unexpected!
7-10’s
We live in a world where most things have now become automatic, immediate, and fast.
How do we manage our feelings when we have to wait for things to grow like a blade of grass.
Do we try to rush? Do you try to pull? Or will we relax and play it cool?
The 7-10’s have taken the theme of waiting from ‘Igloo’. They will take you on a journey through their daily routine, exploring the different feelings and emotions you have while doing these everyday tasks and waiting for something special to happen.
11-13’s
The 11-13’s have been exploring what we do when we are waiting for something to happen... but it doesn’t happen.
They present a story about a hiest in London that goes wrong. With an unreliable group of detectives, thieves that misuse a shrink ray and tourists that have to take matters into their own hands! A chain reaction of events means none of these characters have achieved what they want to but they do find something new.
14-19’s
The 14-19’s performance will see the group visit many stories we've all heard before, but this time you'll see them from a new perspective, with a twist, or a difference. Classics like ‘The Hare and the Rabbit’ and ‘The Princess and the Pea’ will be retold, each story will affect the next, as we travel through many different places and times.
We can’t wait to see all the groups showcase their creativity on Saturday 23 March.
