The Stone Book (1992, 1993)
About the show
Our fourteenth original production was also our first literary adaptation, inspired by book one in Alan Garner’s Stone Quartet. The show toured to local schools in spring 1993, finishing with a publuic performance in Clearwell Caves in the Forest of Dean.
The story is set in 1862 after the Industrial Revolution. Mary is 10 but she can't read; she earns pennies by picking stones from the field. Her father is a stonemason who can't afford to send her to school - but he can teach her new ways of looking at the world.
Totally encapsulates the earthy magic of the original story Times Educational Supplement
