Travelling Light offers placement opportunities to students as part of our employability programme
Hi Beckie, tell us a little about yourself, and your first experience of Travelling Light?
I’m 22 and I’m currently in my 3rd year studying Performing Arts at Winchester Uni. I’d love to be an actor (on stage!) but my back up option is to teach drama in some way because I love working with kids too!
My first experience working with Travelling Light was to help out with Louder than Words. I’d worked with children and young people before, but I’d never worked with anyone with additional needs so I did feel a little out of my depth, but it was in this session that I really understood what it means to work with children and young people who otherwise might not have access to theatre and drama, and I re-discovered my passion of working with kids. I remember seeing the little bits of drama that the kids made at the end of this one session and being absolutely thrilled.
What has been your favourite memory from working with Travelling Light?
Whenever I’m asked this, I always talk about Barton Camp. Seeing all of those kids coming together to create beautiful pieces of drama in just a day was such a lovely experience. I remember a young girl coming up to us near the end of one session and saying something like “This is everything I’ve ever wanted to do!” It was in that moment that I knew this was definitely making a difference and having a positive impact on these kids. I loved all of the works that we saw at the ends of those four days and it was interesting to see the kids’ relationships grow as well. It was really nice just to see smiles all around.
What have you learnt or will take away from your time with us?
I’ve learnt that it’s not all about acting, glitz and glamour; sometimes it’s about working with scraps of newspaper or trying to create costumes and props with plastic bags, bits of rope and a lot of sticky tape! I’ve definitely learned a lot about what goes on ‘behind the scenes’ of performances and workshops; from prop (pom-pom!) making, to set design, to going over the kids’ ideas to create an interesting performance.
I’ve loved working with Travelling Light, I think it’s really helped me learn a lot about the ins and outs of a company whose main focus is the community around them. I think it’s amazing what Travelling Light are doing, and I’m sure that, if I had known about it when I was younger, I would have definitely joined in with at least one of the many different activities.
Thank you for everything!
