Play in a Week
Published on 31 March 2015.
For the third year running, Travelling Light spent a week with Victoria Park Primary School for an inspirational week long residency as part of the Play in a Week project.
Back in January, with the help of writer Mike Akers, the pupils first pitched their idea for a play; which was then turned into the script: Who’s the greatest? Two months later a team of 8 professional theatre makers came to join 8 class teachers, students/TAs and 135 children, to create a play inspired by their current topics: “Ancient Greeks” and “Ancient Egyptians”.
Pupils not only performed in the play but also took responsibility for Design, Choreography, Music, Stage Management and Front of House. The week culminated in two final performances at Bedminster Down Secondary School, one of Victoria Park’s feeder schools.
Play in a Week is a unique and innovative way to look at a school’s curriculum in a creative way. Children explore history, geography, science, literacy and numeracy through a theatrical model; which encourages exploration, team work and confidence.
