Louder Than Words Take to the Screen #culturematters
At Travelling Light we have five weekly youth theatres and included in this offer is Louder Than Words, our group for young people with additional needs. The group was established in 2013, and has been kindly supported by BBC Children in Need this academic year. We are delighted to now have ten registered members in the group aged between eight and sixteen, and we wanted to share what we’ve been up to…
At Travelling Light we believe every child has the right to be creative and play. This term we have been lucky enough to work the marvellous ideas of our Louder Than Words group members into a film. Led by a dramatherapist and a professional videographer, the young people have created many weird and wonderful characters who will feature in the scenes of a short film, set in the mysterious ‘Treetop City’.
It has been remarkable to see this group grow from strength to strength, and there has been a clear shift in the dynamic of the sessions. Last term we were learning skills and creating scenes individually or in pairs, and this year we have started to work more as a ‘company’. It is wonderful to see these young people with such a range of needs build scenes together, share ideas and create something they can equally take ownership of.
Our Louder Than Words group are truly part of the Travelling Light family. Every week they come along and independently join in the fun, whilst parents and caregivers sit together in our meeting room next door. Each individual has grown in confidence as the group has developed, and they have taken this film project in their stride. We can’t wait to see what else they create!
Saturday 12th March is national Disabled Access Day and Bristol venues will be inviting disabled people and their families, friends or carers to visit new places. Colston Hall and Bristol Hippodrome and will be offering tours of their venues, and there will be a BSL signed tour of Clifton Suspension Bridge.
